On Tuesday, the BitTorrent news site TorrentFreak reported that Yahoo! had filtered The Pirate Bay from its search engine. The news quickly caught on globally, as other news organizations reported similar blockages in Australia. In the Slyck forums, members noted that geographical location played a role in determining whether The Pirate Bay was blocked. For example, users in the United States found that Yahoo.com and Yahoo.co.uk failed to index The Pirate Bay, while United Kingdom users found the site to be completely accessible. more…

Math on Display: Visualizations of mathematics create remarkable artwork

Mathematicians often rhapsodize about the austere elegance of a well-wrought proof. But math also has a simpler sort of beauty that is perhaps easier to appreciate: It can be used to create objects that are just plain pretty—and fascinating to boot.

That beauty was richly on display at an exhibition of mathematical art at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Diego in January, where more than 40 artists showed their creations.

Introduction to Brazil

There’s a joke Brazilians like to tell: When the world was created, one of the archangels peered over God’s shoulder at the work in progress and couldn’t help noticing that one country had been especially favored. “You’ve given everything to Brazil,” the archangel said. “It has the longest beaches, the largest river, the biggest forest, the best soil. The weather’s always warm and sunny, with no floods, hurricanes, or natural disasters at all. Don’t you think that’s a little unfair?” “Ah,” God replied, “just wait until you see the people I’m putting there.” … see full ‘Introduction to Brazil article @ frommers

Mexico Banks & Money

The national currency of Mexico is the Peso. When you see prices listed the listing will appear with the $ sign in front of the Peso amount. Banco de Mexico is the nation’s central bank and issues coins and paper money that are legal tender. Although in some parts of the country travelers may be able to spend U.S. Dollars, prices are almost always less expensive when using the Peso. The exchange rate does fluctuate by cents every day. On-line currency converters help travelers to have an idea and translate Pesos into their home country currency. Many places will take U.S. Currency in Mexico, but the exchange rate may not be the best, but stills good due to the competition (e.g. at 10 pesos to the dollar instead of the current bank ATM rate of 10.85) so ask ahead of time. “Small Unmarked Bills” is also the operative phrase: The slightest mark, writing or tear on a U.S. bill will cause it to be refused in Mexico. Highly worn bills will also likely be rejected.
